28th October – Remembering Jigoro Kano:
The Heart and Soul of Judo

Judo is more than a sport. It is a way of life, a journey of self-discovery, and a lifelong lesson in respect, discipline, friendship, and mutual understanding.
On 28 October, we take a moment to remember and honour Master Jigoro Kano (1860–1938), the founder of Kodokan Judo, whose vision has touched the lives of millions of judoka across the world. His legacy reaches far beyond the dojo, living in every student who learns to fall and rise again, every teacher who passes on their knowledge, and every judoka who discovers the true meaning of respect and humility.
Over the years, judo has evolved and continues to change. Yet, beneath the competitions, medals, and modern developments lie the fundamental principles that Master Kano gifted to humanity: Seiryoku Zenyo — the efficient use of energy — and Jita Kyoei — mutual welfare and benefit.
These principles remind us that the true purpose of judo is not simply to defeat an opponent, but to develop ourselves and contribute positively to the lives of others. True happiness in judo is found not only in victory, but in friendship, personal growth, and the shared journey of learning.
We must therefore recognise and respect the many dedicated masters who continue to preserve and teach traditional judo, protecting its roots, values, and deeper philosophy for future generations. They are the guardians of a living heritage, ensuring that the spirit of Kano remains alive on the tatami.
On this day of remembrance, let us bow with gratitude to the founder, honour those who came before us, and renew our commitment to passing on the true spirit of judo.
Judo may change with time, but its soul must never be forgotten.
Remembering Master Jigoro Kano — preserving his vision, honouring his teachings, and keeping the spirit of traditional judo alive.
